In an electrifying opening match of Season 2 in the Women’s Premier League, the Mumbai Indians Women showcased their batting strength in a thrilling chase against Delhi. Led by Harmanpreet Kaur, the team clinched an impressive 4-wicket win over the Delhi Capitals, marking an exciting start to the season. In the opening clash, Mumbai Indians Women, under their skipper’s guidance, chose to field against Delhi Capitals Women after winning the toss.

Delhi’s innings saw a mix of dynamic performances and strategic play, resulting in a total of 171 runs for the loss of five wickets in 20 overs. Although Shafali Verma’s early dismissal for one run posed a setback, Skipper Meg Lanning’s quick 31 runs set a positive tone. Alice Capsey stood out with a solid 75 off 55 deliveries, stabilizing the innings.

Jemimah Rodrigues contributed a rapid 42 runs, boosting the middle order with a brilliant strike rate. Contributions from Marizanne Kapp and Annabel Sutherland also added crucial runs. Mumbai Indians women’s bowling, led by Shabnim Ismail, secured important breakthroughs. However, the Delhi Capitals women concluded their innings with a challenging target of 172 runs for the Mumbai Indians women to chase.

Last ball six wins it for Mumbai Indians

During the chase, Harmanpreet Kaur’s Mumbai team experienced several ups and downs. Kaur herself played a remarkable innings, scoring 55 runs off 34 balls with 7 fours and a six. Additionally, opener Yastika Bhatia contributed 57 runs off 45 balls with 8 fours and 2 sixes. But despite of these brilliant innings, it was Sanjana’s six which deiced the fate for MUM-W.

The excitement peaked when Mumbai Indians Women needed 5 runs off the final ball with debutant Sajeevan Sajana facing. Remarkably, Sajana, who had faced only one ball in the match prior, delivered a match-winning six off the last ball, securing a thrilling 4-wicket victory for MI-W in their Women’s Premier League 2024 opener.
