Australia announce Meg Lanning’s successor as team’s full-time skipper

Alyssa Healy is one of the smartest cricketers and is also among the top players of her side.

Alyssa Healy and Meg Lanning

Meg Lanning announced her retirement last month which ended her great tenure as skipper. Alyssa Healy was named skipper of Australia’s women’s cricket team in all three forms.

After guiding Australia to victory against England in the women’s Ashes series in June and July, the 33-year-old was appointed to the position. Lanning had been ruled out due to an unknown medical condition.

Lanning captained Australia in five World Cup victories and is one of the greats of the game. She declared last month her intention was leaving international cricket. This also made her resign from her position, which she had held since 2014.

Alyssa Healy spoke after being officially announced as skipper. She added, “I am honoured to accept the role of captain and am grateful for the opportunity to lead our team. I’ve really enjoyed the support of the players over the past few months and their encouragement to continue to be who I am and lead the group like I normally would from within.”

The Australian team skipper added, “My approach will remain consistent to what it has been previously, but I’ll make my own mark on the role and be sure that I’m doing the best I possibly can for this group to maintain the success that we’ve had.”

“Prepare spinning wickets at your own demise” : Alyssa Healy

Alyssa Healy, Australia’s recently appointed captain of all formats, has issued a challenge to Team India. She is ready to have turning tracks ready for the Test in Mumbai that takes place in December. If the surface is in their favour, Healy thinks Australia’s spin bowling squad may cause problems for the hosts.

Team Australia’s opener while speaking to the media in the press-conference, “I’m actually really intrigued to see as to what sort of wickets they prepare. I think we’ve got a really, really good spin attack. So do that at your own peril. Don’t get me wrong, the Indians have got a strong spin attack as well. But I mean, we’ve got some of the best leg-spinners in the world. We’ve got Ash Gardener, who took nine wickets on English soil with the ball in hand. So yeah, prepare spinning wickets at your own demise.”
