Netherlands pulled off a stunner against South Africa as the team under the leadership of Scott Edwards won the match by 13 runs and put South Africa’s hopes of making it through to the semi-finals on hold. The only way that the Proteas had to make it to the knockouts was if the clash between Bangladesh and Pakistan ended in no result.
Ian Chappell, the former Australian cricketer, predicted a couple of days ago that South Africa might lose the game against Netherlands and fans were left in shock as the video resurfaced on the internet yet again post the Proteas’ humiliating defeat. “I think that South Africa with their history I think they’ll make a mess of it somewhere,” Chappell said in an exclusive show for wwos.com.au. And much to the stupefaction of the South African fans, his prediction came true on Sunday.

‘Only if Pakistan-Bangladesh clash ended in no result’
As things stand, South Africa’s chances depended on the Pakistan-Bangladesh clash as a win from either the Men in Green or the Bangla Tigers would end their hopes. For the unversed, the only way the Proteas could have made it to the next stage was if the match between the two Asian teams ended in no result.
After putting on 158 runs on the board, Edwards and his men pulled off the unthinkable and the skipper was out of words post the conclusion of the match. Saying that it was a big upset from his team to defeat the mighty Proteas, Edwards said that it was a great experience overall.
“I am lost for words. Went so fast. This is going to take a bit of time to take it all in. We are used to these conditions in Netherlands. We were confident around the 160 mark to defend this. Another great experience, another big upset from the Netherlands. Absolute goal for us after losing the first two games that we are still playing for a spot in the next World Cup. Two results go our way,” Edwards said in the post-match interview.
