WATCH: Aaron Finch announces retirement from Big Bash League in a heartfelt message

Australian cricket stalwart Aaron Finch bid farewell to the Big Bash League (BBL) on Thursday, January 4th. He made a significant retirement announcement just before the Melbourne Renegades’ clash against the Hobart Hurricanes. The former Australian skipper, who has been a pivotal part of the Renegades since the team’s inception, decided to conclude his time despite being contracted until BBL 14.

Finch expressed mixed emotions reflecting on his journey, saying, “There’ve been some real lows but great highs too, and I’ve loved every bit of the journey.” He highlighted the unparalleled joy of winning the BBL title, considering it a special and memorable moment. Finch, who has been with the Melbourne Renegades for the entirety of his career, expressed pride in the club’s achievements and his contributions.

Addressing those who supported him throughout his career, Finch extended his gratitude, saying, “To everyone who’s been part of the journey with me—our members, fans, supporters, my teammates, and all who have had a part to play at the club at all levels—thank you.”

At 37 years old, Finch is likely to retire from T20 cricket altogether, marking the end of an illustrious career. With a remarkable international career that includes 146 ODIs and 103 T20Is for Australia, where he captained the national side 131 times, Finch has also been at the helm of the Renegades for 11 seasons. His contribution to the team includes holding the record for the most runs (3311) and most appearances (106).

Notably, Finch will leave the BBL as the tournament’s second-most prolific run scorer, following Chris Lynn. As he takes a step back from professional cricket, the cricketing community acknowledges and celebrates the enduring impact and achievements of Aaron Finch in the world of T20 cricket.
