After winning the game against Delhi Capitals, Mumbai Indians hosted Kolkata Knight Riders for the 22nd match of the Indian Premier League 2023. Suryakumar Yadav unexpectedly walked onto the field for the toss before the game since Rohit Sharma was sick with a stomach bug. In their first-afternoon matchup of the season, the five-time champs decided to bowl first.
With the bat, KKR struggled to get going, losing their first wicket in the second over. After that, though, Venkatesh Iyer saved Kolkata by holding onto one end for the visitors. He continued his exploits against Mumbai, given his stellar performance this season.
The left-handed batter did not have adequate support from the opposing batters, but this did not prevent him from getting the second century of the season. Iyer completely dominated the game, scoring his first IPL century in 49 balls.
Iyer was eventually dismissed by Riley Meredith in the 18th over of the game after scoring 104 runs in 51 balls. The 2012 and 2014 champions scored 185/6 in their allocated 20 overs. Hrithik Shokeen was the pick of the bowlers for MI, with two wickets.
The Mumbai Indians needed to get off to a fast start in the powerplay while chasing the huge target. Openers Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan delivered just that. While Kishan batted quickly, Rohit helped him with a couple of big hits. However, the team captain did not stay long, falling to Suyash Sharma in the fifth over of the innings after scoring 20 runs.
However, after that, Kishan (58 runs in 25 balls) quickly raced to his half-century to put MI in a dominating position. After his wicket, Suryakumar Yadav (43 runs in 25 balls) and Tilak Varma (30 runs in 25 balls) stabilized the innings and put on an important partnership of 60 runs for the third wicket.
In the end, a brilliant cameo of 24 runs in 13 balls from Tim David helped Mumbai seal the game. Mumbai Indians beat Kolkata Knight Riders by 5 wickets to win their 2nd game of the season.
