On Day 1 of the first Test of the 2023 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Team India dominated the proceedings as the bowlers, led by comeback man Ravindra Jadeja, skittled out Australia for a paltry 177 after the visitors chose to bat first at Nagpur’s Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium.

India had scored 77 runs by the end of the play, thanks to skipper Rohit Sharma’s unbeaten half-century. Off the field, however, the hosts received bad news when star pacer Jasprit Bumrah was ruled out of the entire four-match Test series, according to reports.

According to the Telegraph, the Indian Cricket Board has decided not to risk Bumrah during a World Cup year. With the emphasis on spin in the ongoing Test series, Bumrah will be given more time to recover because he may not be able to handle the workload of a five-day game.

According to Board sources, Bumrah has been bowling at high intensity at the National Cricket Academy, where he has been recovering since being sidelined in September of last year. Bumrah, who suffered a back injury for the first time during the West Indies tour in August, returned to action for India in the T20I series against Australia in September 2022.

However, the pacer’s injury was aggravated as he was rushed, and he was ruled out for another two months. Bumrah was set to return in the ODI series against Sri Lanka, but he suffered another niggle and was ruled out of the series against Sri Lanka, the New Zealand series, and the first two Test matches against Australia.

In Bumrah’s absence, Mohammed Shami and Mohammed Siraj will continue to spearhead India’s pace attack, with Jaydev Unadkat and Umesh Yadav on the bench. The Men in Blued also have plenty of options in white-ball format. India would want their leading pacer to recover and be ready for the ODI series against the Kangaroos.
