Kolkata and Delhi locked horns at the Brabourne Stadium in the 19th game of the season. Both teams had contrasting results after playing three games each. The Men In Purple had won two games out of three while the Men in Blue and Red had won one and lost two.

On Sunday, Shreyas Iyer chose to bowl first after winning the toss. The decision proved to be a terrible one as Delhi openers, David Warner and Prithvi Shaw, smashed 68 runs in the powerplay. Both batters took the attack on the opposition bowlers equally. They ended up scoring 93 runs in 8.4 overs before Shaw (51 off 29) was clean bowled by Varun Chakravarthy. Skipper Rishabh Pant (27 off 14) promoted himself up the order and played a cameo to get the momentum going.

Pant and Warner added 55 runs for the second wicket before the former was caught by Umesh Yadav off Andre Russell. Lalit Yadav (1) and Rovman Powell (8) couldn’t create any impact with the bat. On the other hand, Warner was looking set to get his first hundred for the team after 2012 but was dismissed at 61 off 45 by Yadav. All-rounders, Axar Patel (22* off 14) and Shardul Thakur (29* off 11), later, played valuable cameos to took the team to 215/5, which happens to be the highest team score in the season so far.

In reply, openers Venkatesh Iyer and Ajinkya Rahane had different starts to their innings. Iyer tried to up the ante with 18 off 8 but his innings was abruptly ended due to a catch taken by Patel off Khaleel Ahmed. On the other hand, Rahane struggled at the crease with eight off 14 before his agony was ended by Ahmed. At 38/2, skipper Shreyas Iyer and Nitish Rana (30 off 20) stitched a partnership of 69 runs before the latter was dismissed by Lalit Yadav.

This proved to be the turning of the game. Iyer got out in the very next over and wickets fell in quick succession after that. The team went from 107/3 to 143/8 with Kuldeep Yadav taking four wickets in that phase. The two-time winners went on to lose the game by 44 runs, as they were restricted to 171 all-out.
