Many people were surprised when the Indian Cricket Board sacked the entire selection committee following the failure of the 20-20 World Cup. While it was expected that the Board would make some major decisions, few expected this. The tournament began with a bang but ended with a whimper as India returned empty-handed from yet another World Cup event.

Dinesh Karthik, India’s wicketkeeper-batter during the World Cup, was also taken aback by the “interesting development”. “Very interesting development. I think none of us saw it coming. It is also an opportunity for the new selectors coming in and we have to see how things unfold,” Karthik said on Cricbuzz.

I think their term was coming to an end: Dinesh Karthik

Karthik, however, is not a fan of using the word “sack” to describe the departure of the selection committee. He believes that because their term was coming to an end, change was unavoidable. He then praised the selectors for the difficult task of selecting a squad of 15 players from a large pool, predicting that the new group would have to make some tough decisions.

“I know this word ‘sack’ was used a lot, but I think their term was coming to an end as well. It is a tough job. Picking 15 players from a set of 40-45 players who are all good enough to represent the country it’s not going to be easy. Credit to them. They have done a good job. The new selectors have some strong decisions to take,” Karthik said.

The Indian cricket team’s transition phase began with the white-ball tour to New Zealand, where a number of young players were given opportunities. There is also talk of naming different captains for each format.

Meanwhile, Hardik Pandya is in charge of the T20I team for the New Zealand tour, while Shikhar Dhawan is in charge of the ODI team. The Twenty20 International series is currently underway, with India leading 1-0 after two games.
