There have been some repercussions in the game following reports from the International Football Association Board (IFAB), which oversees the sport’s regulations, that they are testing the use of blue cards to punish players for a short while for cynical fouls.

According to The Telegraph, a player who receives a blue card will be placed among the yellow and red cards. The player will be out of the game for ten minutes. A player would receive a red card if they were dealt a second blue card.

What does a Blue Card mean in football?

A player who receives a blue card is removed from the game for ten minutes. After serving their suspension, if the player receives another blue card, they will be given a red card.

Is the Blue Card an official penalty card recognized by FIFA?

FIFA reports that the Football Association (FA) recommended that in order to evaluate the blue card’s efficacy and any possible long-term problems, it be introduced to lower levels like the Men’s and Women’s FA Cups.

What types of infractions lead to a player receiving a Blue Card?

It is anticipated that more reckless tackles, which are not inside the red card category but are more serious than infractions that result in yellow cards, could end up in blue cards. In addition, the player will be spared a three-match suspension for a major infraction. A player who receives a blue card might still face a ban, though, as it is a more serious offence than a yellow card.

In which football leagues or competitions is the Blue Card used?

The IFAB’s AGM is scheduled for next month, which is when the rule’s details will be revealed. Nonetheless, it has been tested around amateur leagues in Wales and England. The new Blue card, if it is introduced, will not be exclusive to football. Long-standing regulations in rugby and hockey provide that a player who commits a foul may be momentarily removed from the area of play. However, everything usually depends on the referee’s assessment of the seriousness of the offence.

Can a player receive multiple Blue Cards in a single match?

A player will be removed from the game for the remainder of it if they receive two blue cards. If a player is dealt a blue card followed by a yellow card they may also be sent off.
