In the 16th match of the Indian Premier League 2023 (IPL 2023), Mumbai Indians (MI) faced Delhi Capitals (DC) at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. Five-time champion registered their first victory of the season as they defeated Delhi by six wickets. In the game MI skipper, Rohit Sharma led from the front, smashing his first IPL half-century in two years and winning Player of the Match for his 45-ball 65.
Earlier, after winning the toss MI opted to bowl first. In the second consecutive game, the team missed the services of English pacer Jofra Archer who is suffering from an elbow injury. Although, after the victory, Jofra wished the team and called it one of many. In a tweet, the pacer said, “What A game boys, 1st of many.”
However, batting first DC started well as David Warner and Prithvi Shaw added 33 runs for the opening wicket. Prithvi once again failed to capitalize on the opportunity and got out for 10 ball-15. Senior batter Manish Pandey at number three played a quick inning to rescue Delhi and lead them to a comfortable position. Although, eventually Delhi was in trouble after being restricted to 98-5 in 12.3 overs.
Delhi was treated with Rohit Sharma’s masterclass
Meanwhile in the End riding on Axar Patel’s quick half-century and a steady knock from skipper David Warner Delhi posted a competitive total of 172-10 in 19.4 overs. Axar in his innings scored 54 runs off 25 balls while Warner scored 51 runs off 47 balls. Piyush Chawla and Jason Behrendroff shined with the bowl as they clinched three wickets each.
Chasing 172 was not an easy task but MI batters made it easy. Skipper Rohit Sharma along with Ishan Kishan added 71 runs for the first wicket in just 7.1 overs. Kishan sacrificed his wicket after Rohit tried to steal a quick single. However, Kishan in his innings scored 31 runs off 26 balls while Rohit hammered a magnificent half-century. He scored 65 off 45 balls with the help of four sixes and six boundaries.
In the end, With some quick fires from Tilak Verma, Camron Green, and Tim David MI registered their first victory of the season. Verma in his innings scored 41 off 29 balls with the help of four sixes and a boundary. Jofra Archer is living the king size life. He was sold to Mumbai Indians at high price in auction. In the first season he was unavailable and in this season he has missed the matches due to injury issue.
