Sporting arenas are one of the most exciting places for a sportsperson. There are many iconic stadiums in the world where players dream to play just for once in their life. However, not all stadiums give a homely feel to the players as they head out to compete against the home team. There are some grounds that players absolutely dread playing in because of the hostile treatment of the fans present in the stadium.

On that note, let’s take a look at some of the most belligerent stadiums in the world:

  1. WACA, Australia –

The Western Australia Cricket Association Ground in Perth was considered one of the deadliest pitches in the world. The opposition teams had a tough time playing in the stadium. Firstly, due to Australia’s sledging on the field and secondly due to the crowd’s comments. It required something special from players to perform under such testing situations. The Australian team were an indomitable force at the venue and was hugely successful at the stadium.

2. Edgbaston, England:

If there’s any crowd that can give competition to the hostile Australian crowd, it’s the English crowd at the Edgbaston stadium. The Barmy Army at the ground makes life hell for any player trying to come on top of the home team. The fan group were seen at their absolute best when they gave a hard time to the Australian cricketers David Warner and Steve Smith who returned to International cricket following their one-year ban.

3. Eden Gardens, India:

The crowd at the Eden Gardens are crazy about cricket. They shower their love on their favourite players in their good times. But can also turn out to be quite antagonistic when they perform at their worst. The best example of this is the 1996 WC Semi-final between India and Sri Lanka. The crowd unleashed their wrath on the Indian team who had a dramatic collapse in the important knockout game. People began throwing bottles into the field and there was widespread arson in the stadium as well.

4. Wankhede Stadium, India:

The Wankhede stadium in Mumbai is a historic stadium in Indian cricket. The crowd at the stadium went berserk when MS Dhoni smashed the World Cup winning six in the final of the 2011 world cup. However, there was one incident when the crowd booed their favourite player Sachin Tendulkar at the stadium. The crowd booed the ‘master blaster’ after he got out cheaply in the third Test against England in 2006. For the crowd at Wankhede, no matter who you are, if you don’t perform you will face their wrath.

5. Sydney Cricket Ground, Australia:

Sydney is one of the oldest grounds in Australia and has a rich history associated with it. The Australian crowd is known to give hard time to the opposition no matter which stadium they’re in. The Sydney Cricket Ground is no different. The most infamous incident involving the Sydney crowd is the recent racial abuse meted out to the Indian Cricketer Mohammed Siraj. The Indian team replied in the best possible manner by drawing the game and winning the series in the next Test.
