According to reports, late on Saturday night, the senior national selection committee of the Indian Cricket Board selected the 15-player roster for the ODI World Cup 2023, with KL Rahul making the team but Sanju Samson was left out.

The Indian Express report further stated that the team was chosen by selection committee chairman Ajit Agarkar, who travelled to Sri Lanka to meet with Indian captain Rohit Sharma and coach Rahul Dravid. The encounter was held following the Asia Cup match between Pakistan and India in Kandy, which was called off after the first innings.

Samson, Tilak Varma, as well as Prasidh Krishna, who recently arrived in Sri Lanka for the previously mentioned Asia Cup, were also left off of the World Cup roster.

Rohit Sharma will serve as the team’s captain, and Ishan Kishan, who has excelled with the bat within the middle order, has also earned a spot in the squad. Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, and Suryakumar Yadav will lead India’s batting order in the multi-nation event in addition to skipper Sharma.

Bowlers for the Indian team

The selection committee and team management placed a strong focus on the depth of the batting lineup, which also resulted in the inclusion of allrounders Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, and Shardul Thakur.

In terms of bowling, the pace attack will be led by Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, and Mohammed Siraj, with spinner Kuldeep Yadav also making the team. There was a case of Yuzvendra Chahal being selected in the team considering his excellent track record for Team India. The selectors had to make a hard choice between Kuldeep Yadav and him to be the lone leg spinner in the squad.

The Indian Cricket Board intended to keep its selection committee in session on September 4 evening since it had till September 5 to send in the completed World Cup team to the apex cricket body. However, it is thought that the medical staff decided there was no use in keeping Rahul from treatment once they gave him the go-ahead.
