Three stunning captaincy records of MS Dhoni that Jos Buttler can break
Jos Buttler led the England team to victory in the 20-20 World Cup 2022.
Jos Buttler is fast becoming one of the best captains to have ever led England in white-ball cricket. To add more to his captaincy, it was under his leadership, England won the 20-20 World Cup 2022 and it remains to see if the team would repeat the same in the upcoming 50-over World Cup to be played in India in 2023.
MS Dhoni, on the other hand, is vastly considered the best white-ball captain in India and notably, it was under his captaincy, India won all major World events in limited overs format. As things stand, we decided to handpick three records of Dhoni that Buttler can break in the coming days.
Let us take a look at three records of Dhoni that the Three Lions skipper can break:
1) More than one 20-20 World Cup trophy
When India bowed out of the 2007 50-over World Cup in the group stage, Dhoni was handed over the captaincy and was tasked to lead a fresh team for the inaugural edition of the 20-20 World Cup in the same year. The Ranchi-born eventually led the team to victory against Pakistan in the finals and it remains the only 20-20 World Cup trophy for Dhoni.
However, with age under his belt, Buttler, who won the 20-20 World Cup 2022, can go on to win the next edition of the 20-20 World Cup in 2024 as the captain of the England team and eventually can break Dhoni’s record by winning the trophy twice.
2) More than 3 World titles
Under MS Dhoni, India won the 2007 20-20 World Cup, the 2011 50-over World Cup and the Champions Trophy in 2013. The former Indian wicketkeeper went on to become the only captain to win all three major white-ball trophies and Jos Buttler, who is only 32 years old, can win more than three World titles.
For instance, Buttler has a golden chance to let England retain the 50-over World Cup by winning the same in 2023 and the Champions Trophy in 2025. With yet another 20-20 World Cup set to take place in 2024, Buttler can eventually surpass Dhoni’s stupendous record.
3) Most runs as captain in T20Is
Although MS Dhoni gathered over 11,000 runs in his entire career as the captain of the Indian team across all formats, he failed as a batter in the shortest format of the game. Notably, the former Indian cricketer has only over 1000 runs in the shortest format of the game as the skipper of the Indian team.
However, on the contrary, the three lions skipper Jos Buttler has already gathered 633 runs as captain in the T20Is and looks on course to surpass the former Indian captain. With age under his belt, Buttler can eventually score more as captain in the T20Is than the Ranchi-born.
