Indian Cricket Board secretary Jay Shah on Thursday announced that Indian women cricketers will get the same match fee as their male counterparts as the board takes the first step towards tackling discrimination.
Shah in a series of tweets said that the Indian Cricket Board is implementing a pay equity policy for its contracted women players.
According to the Indian Cricket Board statement on Thursday, the women’s cricketers will be paid Rs. 15 lakh, Rs. 6 lakh and Rs. 3 lakh, respectively, for Test, ODI and T20Is, respectively, they feature in.
“I’m pleased to announce Indian Cricket Board’s first step towards tackling discrimination. We are implementing a pay equity policy for our contracted Indian Cricket Board Women cricketers. The match fee for both Men and Women Cricketers will be the same as we move into a new era of gender equality in Indian Cricket,” Shah tweeted.
“The Indian Cricket Board Women cricketers will be paid the same match fee as their male counterparts. Test (INR 15 lakhs), ODI (INR 6 lakhs), T20I (INR 3 lakhs). Pay equity was my commitment to our women cricketers and I thank the Apex Council for their support. Jai Hind,” he added.

Former India captain Mithali Raj welcomed the decision, saying: “This is a historic decision for women’s cricket in India! The pay equity policy along with the Women’s Indian T20 League next year, we are ushering into a new era for women’s cricket in India. Thank you Jay Shah Sir and Indian Cricket Board for making this happen. Really happy today.”

The Indian Cricket Board recently at its 91st annual general meeting approved to conduct the Women’s Indian T20 League from next year onwards. The India women’s team under the captaincy of Harmanpreet Kaur reclaimed its Asia Cup crown for the seventh time and also clinched a historic 3-0 ODI series clean sweep in and against England amid a run-out controversy and the first-ever silver medal at the Commonwealth Games.
However, a certain section of fans were unhappy with the landmark move and expressed their disappointment on the announcement of equal pay. They argued that since Men’s cricket bring more viewership and sponsors why should women get the same pay when they fail to attract crowd. Here are some of the reactions on the historic move by Indian Cricket Board:
Basically 99% BCCI’s revenue is from men’s cricket. How can there be equal pay if women’s cricket isn’t bringing in the money. Indian men’s team is paying for both parties ?. Indian cricket board taking this decision will put a lot of pressure on other nations as well. ICC=BCCI

The amount of people hating on BCCI's decision of giving equal pay to Indian Women's Cricket team is disgustingly concerning.
Sexism and elitism at their bests?— Aurghyadip Kundu (@aurghyadip) October 28, 2022
I dont want to sound rude, but men's cricket generate more revenue infact 99 percent revenue. Then what is the reason for the equal pay?
Pay should be based on revenue generated right?— New Commander (@commander_new) October 27, 2022
Indian Men's Cricket Generates Billions of money, & Women's cricket team have 95% Less Fans, Less Sponsorships, Lesser Broadcasting & Obviously Less Revenue.
So, To all Feminists who's thinking this is a Gender equality is Shit.
They don't have any knowledge on cricket.— Bietch (@fockyeh) October 27, 2022
But, All they want is Same Wages.
I bet y'all don't even watch women cricket. If you really want gender equality, Fight for same rules As Men, Same Ball size, Same boundary size etc..
This is definitely a Dumb financial decision in the name of gender. Doesn't work in all Cases.— Bietch (@fockyeh) October 27, 2022
That's better
. dissolve Indian women cricket teamThey just play to avoid kitchen

Women demand equality in all areas yet are not able to even match 50% viewership of what we get from Indian men's cricket team. By every means this is a bad move and waste of money.
It's basically giving away the money BCCI earned from men's cricket matches to women's team.— UTDSiuuuu (@AdithyaVenkatr3) October 27, 2022
This is very less …..
I demand 37% reservation for women in indian men's cricket team @BCCI @JayShah https://t.co/FMKE8uLCav— Lord Shaw™ (@Fire_cracker56) October 27, 2022
Intentions don't matter in business. This isn't Sarkari Naukri.
Cricket wasn't a money machine in 80s.BCCI had to seek help of Lataji to even pay it '83 winning team.
Post that, Indian Men's cricket zoomed upwards.
If women's cricket brings more/equal money..then yes

Very good initiative..
But that doesn't mean that tomorrow india hocky/football women team also asked for same…
Indian Men's cricket team generates 10 times more revenue that's women's. But cricketers fees are just 50 times lower than revenue.
BCCI afford it , Not others

Since years Indian mens cricket team proved themselves, won every form of cricket trophies, created revenue and made BCCI world's richest cricket organization.
Now like other places here again women will get equal benifit of all efforts and hard work done by MEN.#EqualPay— Moksh Of Men (@mishrag47) October 27, 2022
Sadly it’s not about how hard you work, but how much value you create.
Which for cricket would be money generated from advertisements or ticket sales.
If more people start watching games, then BCCI can ask for more money from advertisements and hence pay higher to the players.
