‘That was very…’ – Hema Malini on the time when she had to sit on Dev Anand’s lap
Bollywood’s dream girl Hema Malini was one of the most desired actresses of her time. Reminiscing about the past, Hema gets candid about her experience shooting for the film ‘Johny Mera Naam’ in 1970. Recently during an event celebrating the legendary Hindi film actor Dev Anand’s 100th birth anniversary, the actress dropped some mega truth bombs from the past. She shared untold stories from her shoot with the late legendary actor.
The actress went on to narrate a very embarrassing time for her. This was from the song shoot of ‘O Mere Raja’. Dev Anand and Hema Malini were shooting at Bihar, near Nalanda. During the song shoot a sequence required them to get into a sky trolley. Recalling the embarrassing moment of her life, Hema revealed she had to sit on the actor’s lap for the scene. However, it doesn’t end here, the actress went on to add that the situation got more awkward when the power got shut mid-air and they were stuck in the same position for quite a while.
Hema Malini’s awkward tale:
The veteran Bollywood actress stated, “We were instructed to enter the rope chair in a certain scene. He is already sitting when I have to sit in another chair, but since I missed it, he forces me to sit on his lap. I felt quite uncomfortable in the movie and in real life since that was incredibly embarrassing for me. The rope chair began to move as the shot began, but it abruptly halted in the midst. Electricity has stopped. I remarked, “Dev Saab, I can’t sit here.” I didn’t want to lean entirely on his lap. Very uncomfortable, indeed.”
Journalist Bhawana Somaaya who was at that time interviewing the duo comforted a scared Hema Malini. She asked her to look him in his eyes instead of looking down. Talking about their film, the duo were a hit in the movie ‘Johny Mera Naam’ that was released in 1970. The film was directed by Vijay Anand and with music by Kalyanji-Anandji. It was Hema’s one of the biggest hits of that time. Dev Anand was already a superstar then.
