Henry Shipley took a career-high five for 31 as New Zealand thrashed Sri Lanka by 198 runs in the first One-Day International in Auckland on Saturday. Sri Lanka was bundled out for 76 in the 20th over while chasing 275, with Shipley orchestrating the attack on a great wicket at Eden Park.

Only three Sri Lankan batters reached double figures on their dreadful scorecard. Angelo Mathews, with 18 runs in 25 balls, was the highest scorer for the Lankans, while Chamika Karunaratne and Lahiru Kumara managed to score 11 and 10 runs, respectively.

Earlier, with three deliveries remaining in their innings, New Zealand was all out for 274. Five New Zealanders scored over 25, but opener Finn Allen’s 51 was the highest by a New Zealander. Daryl Mitchell scored 47, Glenn Phillips 39, and Rachin Ravindra (49) fell just short of a half-century in his debut One-Day International. Chamika Karunaratne was the standout Sri Lankan bowler, taking four for 43 on a lively Eden Park pitch.

Former captain Angelo Mathews was tasked with reviving Sri Lanka, which had lost both of its openers within four overs in his first ODI in two years. The sluggishness became a full-fledged crisis when Shipley reduced Sri Lanka to 31 for five in 10 overs. With consecutive deliveries, the 26-year-old dismissed Charith Asalanka and Sri Lanka skipper Dasun Sanaka, but Karunaratne denied him a hat-trick. Blair Tickner caught Mathews lbw for 18, which was the highest score by a Sri Lankan.

The visitors were also whitewashed in the two-match Test series played earlier, which cost them a spot in the Test Championship final against Australia. As a result, India made it to the match scheduled to be played at the Oval on the 7th of June.

With the loss in the first ODI, Sri Lanka’s direct place in the ODI World Cup 2023 to be played in India may have come into jeopardy as well, The second ODI of the three-match series is set for Tuesday in Christchurch.
