Iconic former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar has unveiled his chosen playing XI for India in the upcoming first Test against South Africa. The legendary right-handed batsman strategically composed a formidable team, featuring some of the world’s finest players. The highly anticipated match is scheduled to take place at SuperSport Park in Centurion on December 26th, aligning with the Boxing Day tradition.
Gavaskar’s selection raised eyebrows, introducing an unexpected inclusion. His preferred opening duo consists of Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rohit Sharma, with Shubman Gill securing the number 3 spot and the reliable Virat Kohli at number 4.
“My Playing XI is going to be very simple. The openers will be [Yashasvi] Jaiswal and captain Rohit Sharma. Shubman Gill number three, number four [Virat] Kohli.” Gavaskar was quoted as saying by One Cricket.
Number five is KL Rahul, number six is Shreyas Iyer: Sunil Gavaskar
He picked up KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer as India’s middle-order batters. Notably, Gavaskar made a surprising move by opting for both spin-bowling all-rounders, including the almost certain choice of Ravindra Jadeja and the occasionally controversial selection of Ravichandran Ashwin. Despite Ashwin often facing criticism during away tours, Gavaskar displayed confidence in the seasoned campaigner, trusting him to make a significant impact in the Test XI against South Africa.
“Number five is KL Rahul, number six is Shreyas Iyer or five and six that can move here and there. After that, it will be Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin. And then the three fast bowlers, Mukesh Kumar, Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammad Siraj,” said Gavaskar
