Devon Conway, the opener for New Zealand against Australia, is still recovering from a thumb injury he received during the most recent Twenty20 International series, thus he will not play in the opening Test. After getting hurt while keeping wickets in Auckland, the left-handed hitter failed to bat during the second Twenty20 International and was later ruled unfit to play the third and final Twenty20 International against Australia.

Early tests following the incident ruled out any severe problems with his thumb, including a fracture.
