Young India opener Yashasvi Jaiswal was out for 80 in the very first over of the day. Joe Root got the big wicket when he had Jaiswal caught and bowled. This gave England a great start to the day on a pitch where spin is starting to have its say.
Team India ended the first day at 119/1 with Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill in the middle. The very second ball of the second day saw Jaiswal hit Root for a four to signal his intention.
England were bowled out for 246 on the opening day of the series. Ben Stokes led the charge with the bat scoring 70 runs for his side. Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja picked three wickets each for India. Axar Patel and Jasprit Bumrah shared the spoils to pick two wickets apiece.
Ravichandran Ashwin lauds Yashasvi Jaiswal for his knock
Veteran Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin praised young Yashasvi Jaiswal at the end of the day. India’s young opener went after Tom Hartley and put the debutant under pressure. It was India who played Baz-Ball cricket to stun the visiting side led by Ben Stokes.
While speaking to Jio Cinema, Ashwin said “He (Jaiswal) had a great time in the IPL, had a wonderful start in first-class cricket. I am quite enjoying it. I am seeing Rishabh Pant there. His fearless cricket is serving him well”
Yashasvi Jaiswal began his Test career with an amazing century on debut versus the West Indies. “Yashasvi hasn’t put a foot wrong, he has taken to Test cricket like a fish to water” Ashwin further said to Jio Cinema.
While speaking about the state of the game, Ashwin said, “It was pretty interesting in the first session, maybe there was a bit of moisture. Because of the early moisture, there was enough speed. Then it slowed down. Not enough speed to carry through to the slips.” Finally, the veteran bowler summarized the game and hoped for India to find a centurion in the 1st innings. “240 was a very very good competitive total. Thought 30-40 runs more than what we would have liked. Someone making a hundred tomorrow will put us in the driver’s seat.”

What to make of this innings of Jaiswal. Plenty of aggression, Sehwag-ish but does he have it him to show the mental talent as well?!
Of shot selection and of a better understanding of where the game stands.#YashasviJaiswal #Jaiswal #INDvENG

Till Yashasvi jaiswal playing, Tom Hartley was looking helpless. Now he will become unplayable.
That's what an attacking inning makes difference. #INDvsENG #INDvENG #Bazball #YashasviJaiswal pic.twitter.com/2fsQgOP3Yr— Satya Prakash (@Satya_Prakash08) January 26, 2024
