Shubman Gill reveals MS Dhoni's words of comfort after his dismal ODI debut

MS Dhoni, the former Indian captain, has been hitting the headlines of late and the 41-year-old is known for his calm and composed attitude in crunch situations. More than that, Dhoni is also known for encouraging young players and backing them in their rough phases.

Shubman Gill, believed to be one of the emerging stars for team India, opened up on the former Indian captain and said that he backed him when he failed in his debut against New Zealand way back in 2019.

For the unversed, in his debut match, Gill managed to contribute only 9 runs out of the 21 balls that he faced and the Men in Blue were bowled out for a cheap total of 92. To make his debut worse, the Black Caps chased down the target inside 15 overs and crushed India to make the series 3-1 with India winning the first three matches.

I really liked his gesture: Shubman Gill

Commenting on the incident, Gill relived the moment and said that it was the former skipper who made the disastrous day, a better one. Opining on Dhoni backing him after his sepulchral debut, the right-handed batter said that he liked the gesture.

“The day I debuted for India, we got all out on 90 [92] and I scored 15 [9]. I was dejected upon both losing the match and not doing well personally. Realizing that I was sad, Mahi [MS Dhoni] bhai came up to me and said ‘Your debut was better than mine,” Gill was quoted as saying in Dil Diyan Gallan Season 2, a show hosted by actor Sonam Bajwa.

“Then he started joking around and I felt better. For a player of his stature to come and talk to a debutant, I really liked his gesture,” he added. Dhoni, who made his debut against Bangladesh in 2004, was eventually run-out for a duck in the match and the cricketer grew in stature, to become one of the legends of the game.
