The Kathmandu District Court found Sandeep Lamichhane guilty of the crime of rape. At the subsequent hearing, the former Nepal skipper’s prison sentence will be determined by the court.

Nevertheless, Lamichhane is still among Asia’s best spinners who participates in leagues around the world. He has become the only cricket player from Nepal who has participated in the IPL. Moreover, the leg-spinner has competed in the Global T20 Canada, Men’s Hundred, Big Bash League, T10 League, and Caribbean Premier League in addition to the IPL.

The 23-year-old appeared to have a promising future, but a rape case caused his career to take a turn for the worst. On August 21, 2022, the leg spinner was accused of sexually assaulting a 17-year-old girl, according to a complaint that the Kathmandu District Attorney’s office filed against him. On September 6, the girl lodged a lawsuit against him. Lamichhane was subsequently taken into custody upon his arrival after the Caribbean Premier League.

Earlier this year, Lamichhane was granted bail and released; but, today, a single-judge panel led by Shishir Raj Dhakal issued a judgement convicting him. Importantly, the bench found that the girl had not been underage when the rape occurred. The cricketer’s jail sentence will be decided by the court at the next hearing.

Is Sandeep Lamichhane still playing?

In the ongoing Nepal Pro Club Championship, Sandeep Lamichhane is leading the PARSA team. Under Lamichhane’s leadership, PARSA defeated NAC in the semi finals yesterday to guarantee their spot in the competition final. The final, which pits PARSA against Nepal Police Club, is set for tomorrow afternoon. In Birgunj, the match will start at 1 PM IST.

Lamichhane was signed by PSL team Lahore Qalandars to be their Platinum Pick for the upcoming 2024 campaign. The spinner’s appearance for the Qalandars during the PSL 2024 competition is improbable at this point. The former Nepal skipper last participated in the IPL in the year 2019.
