The New Zealand cricket team’s breakthrough star in the current ODI World Cup 2023 in India is Rachin Ravindra. In his first season in the league, the all-rounder has been in incredible form. He has amassed three hundreds and has been a key part of the team’s journey to the semi-finals.
The fact that Ravindra’s name is a combination of Indian batting greats Sachin Tendulkar along with Rahul Dravid is one of the more talked-about stories. The child himself explained the origin of his moniker in a conversation with the world cup’s official broadcaster.
But, the name was proposed by Ravindra’s father, who immigrated to New Zealand from Bengaluru. It wasn’t until years later that they recognised it was a combination of Sachin and Rahul. He also suggested that it was not purposeful at all.
Rachin Ravindra’s dad Krishnamurthy spoke to the Print earlier this week. He said, “When Rachin was born, my wife suggested the name, and we didn’t spend a lot of time discussing it. The name sounded good, was easy to spell, and short, so we decided to go with it. It was only some years later that we realised the name was a mix of Rahul and Sachin’s names. He wasn’t named with the intention to make our child a cricketer or anything of the sort.”
Former cricket player Krishnamurthy claims to have let his kids pursue any career path they so desired. Krishnamurthy added, “As parents, our hopes for our children extend to any field they choose to pursue. When Rachin expressed an interest in cricket, we supported him wholeheartedly and hoped he would excel in it, just as we would for our daughter in her chosen path.”
Rachin Ravindra’s incredible stride in ODI World Cup 2023
Even though Ravindra wasn’t initially named after Tendulkar or Dravid, he has already surpassed a few of their records, including being the player with the most runs and hundreds in the world cup before the age of 25.
With 565 runs under his belt, he is now third among all-time run scorers, after South Africa’s Quinton de Kock and India’s Virat Kohli.
