Rizwan Javed, the club cricket player from the UK, was on Thursday banned from all cricket for 17 and a half years for his involvement in multiple efforts to manipulate matches in the Abu Dhabi T10 League during 2021.
In an official statement Alex Marshall, General Manager Integrity of the Apex Cricket Council said, “Rizwan Javed has received a lengthy ban from cricket for his repeated and serious attempts to corrupt professional cricketers.”
The Emirates Cricket Board (ECB) sanctioned the debut of the Abu Dhabi T10 in 2017. In September of last year, the apex cricket council brought charges against Rizwan. Eight other players and officials had found themselves charged on behalf of the ECB. The statement added, “The sanction imposed should send a strong message to other corrupters trying to target cricket at any level and demonstrates that any attempt to corrupt cricket will be strongly dealt with.”
Who else has been involved in this fixing saga?
All-rounder Nasir Hossain of Bangladesh was also included as one of the accused. He is presently serving a two-year suspension due to the same. The prohibition, which is in effect until September 19, 2023, was put in place. This is due to Rizwan not answering queries about his participation during the Abu Dhabi T10 Cricket League in 2021.
He was charged under many provisions from the Anti-Corruption Code, particularly Article 2.1.1. The reports further state that he attempted to rig games during the Abu Dhabi T10 2021 three times. There is undoubedtly going to be more news to follow in such a controversial scenario.
In addition, he was accused of violating Article 2.1.3 by giving prizes to encourage corrupt behaviour and Article 2.4.4 by withholding information about approaches he received to participate in corrupt behaviour. He was also accused of neglecting or declining to assist with any inquiry without a valid reason (Article 2.4.6). Rizwan forfeited his legal entitlement to a hearing and was found guilty of the counts. This occurred when the batter did not answer to the allegations made against him.
