Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) all-rounder Shardul Thakur said he is not someone who would play for a spot in the World Cup. The all-rounder is one of the contenders to make the 2023 World Cup squad and has stated that he is focused on trying to contribute towards the team’s success whenever given an opportunity.

Thakur took 4/37 as India won the final one-day international against West Indies by the huge margin of 200 runs to clinch the three-match series 2-1 on Tuesday. Put in to bat, India scored a mammoth total of 351-5 with captain Hardik Pandya smashing 18 in the last over for a 52-ball 70 not out. West Indies was all out in reply for 151 in 35.3 overs. This is his best spell in one-day cricket.

I think the team expects something from me so I have been kept in the team: Shardul Thakur

He spoke about his brilliant spell with the ball, “I think the team expects something from me so I have been kept in the team. Whenever I get a chance to play, I feel the team has confidence in me so they gave me the chance to play. Whenever I get an opportunity I try to contribute to the team’s success whether it’s with bat, ball or in fielding. At the end of the day, I should be happy that I have made an effort, my performances should be impactful whichever department it is.”

As far as World Cup is concerned, Thakur is not among those who play for his spot. He stated, “Very wrong of me to think I will play for my spot in the WC. I will do what the team needs from me.” Thakur also praised the bowling department saying, “Bowling unit bowled well and we were trying to put in our best effort despite Windies losing three at the top.”

His fellow teammate Mukesh Kumar also made a significant contribution picking up 3-30 in his spell. Brandon King and Kyle Mayers. The duo’s combined efforts ensured a collapse to the West Indies innings, setting up a comfortable victory for India.
