Rohit Sharma has been ruled out of the second Test against Bangladesh, which begins on December 22 in Mirpur. The India captain will not travel to Dhaka after missing the first Test in Chattogram. In his absence, vice-captain KL Rahul will lead the team in the second and final Test of the series, which India leads 1-0.

The news of Rohit’s unavailability emerged on Monday (December 19) after it was found that the skipper’s thumb, which was injured during the second ODI of the ongoing tour, has not fully healed. He seems to be suffering from a little bit of stiffness. Given the importance of the Indian team’s upcoming assignments, the Indian Cricket Board, selection committee, and team management have decided not to risk him at this time.

It is understood that Rohit, who is currently in Mumbai, would have batted through the Test but was concerned about the risk involved in fielding. If he gets hurt on that thumb again, the medical team and team management believe it will be serious on the field.

Rahul responded that he was still awaiting the specifics when asked about the likelihood of Rohit’s availability for the second Test. “We may be able to know in the next day or two, even I am not aware of it,” the vice-captain had said at the press conference after the first Test on Sunday.

The medical staff examined Rohit after he sustained a thumb injury while attempting to take a catch in the slips during the second ODI and rushed him to Mumbai for treatment on December 7. Since then, he has been receiving treatment in the city.

Before the second Test, the team management was having a difficult time choosing which player to leave out, but Rohit’s absence may have provided a solution. Shubman Gill’s first Test century helped India win the first Test by 188 runs, while KL Rahul, the other opener and acting captain, struggled to find the strike zone.
