On Day Four of the ongoing WTC Final 2023, Australia started the day with 123/4 on the board and a lead of 296 runs. While the Kangaroos needed to get more and more runs, India needed to get their opposition all out for a lesser score. In only the second over of the day, Umesh Yadav got rid of Marnus Labuschagne. At 124/5, the likes of Cameron Green and Alex Carey put together 43 runs.
The former was out in a weird manner facing Ravindra Jadeja. On the other hand, Carey scored another fifty in his Test career. With him, Mitchell Starc (41) put together 93 runs for the seventh wicket. More importantly, Australia’s lead was increasing with every run scored. In the end, they decided to declare the innings at 270/8 with skipper Pat Cummins losing his wicket. With this, India was asked to chase an improbable target of 444 runs.
India batted better on Day four to keep the WTC final 2023 alive
In reply, the Asian side has a steep task to achieve on Day Five. At The Oval, the highest chase is 264, achieved by England more than 100 years back. On the other hand, India’s highest fourth innings total was 429/8, chasing 438 against the Three Lions in 1979. Meanwhile, they had a great start with Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma scoring 41 runs in just seven overs.
However, in the last over before Tea, the former got out in one of the most controversial manners. On the other hand, Sharma scored 43 before getting to Nathan Lyon in what was a poorly executed lap sweep shot. Cheteshwar Pujara (27) was caught behind trying to play the upper cut, a shot he never plays.
At 93/3, the team needed a partnership to take the team on Day five without further damage. As it turned out, the former India skipper Virat Kohli and vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane have put together 71 runs and counting to end day four on 164/3, needing another 280 runs to win a global title after 10 years.

India need to bat for another 130 overs to save this Test match against Australia. Just a reminder that Babar Azam alone batted for 132 overs against Australia and scored 196 runs in an absolute batting masterclass last year ??? #WTCFinal #WTC23Final pic.twitter.com/NiSSkJkJ7V
