Shubman Gill, the opener for the Gujarat Titans, was named the team’s new captain for the 2024 IPL. He will take over as captain after Hardik Pandya, an all-around player, was sent to his former side, the Mumbai Indians, on Monday in a significant all-cash deal.
With 483 runs across 16 games, Gill was the Titans’ second-highest run scorer and one of their star acquisitions in the IPL 2022. In the IPL 2023, he elevated his game even further, scoring 890 runs in 17 games and taking home the Orange Cap.
The twenty-four-year-old has enormous shoes to fill. Local Gujarati youngster Hardik guided the Titans towards their first-ever crown in 2022 and finished second in 2023. He was well-liked for creating a unified culture in the changing area.
Shubman Gill in a statement after being announced captain said that, “I am delighted and proud to assume the Captaincy of Gujarat Titans and thank the franchise for their trust in me to lead such a fine team. We have had two exceptional seasons and I keenly look forward to leading the team with our exciting brand of cricket.”
Gill would be among the IPL’s youngest captains. He will be working with Gary Kirsten and Ashish Nehra’s coaching team. Although he has not held the position of captain for an international team at any level. He has captained his state on a few occasions before-hand. The Team India batter served as vice-captain of India at the 2018 Under-19 World Cup.
Hardik Pandya rejoins Mumbai Indians in historic trade
Pandya will now join the Mumbai Indians, the team that first spotted him, for ?15 crore. In an even larger all-cash trade, the five-time IP winners acquired that money as Royal Challengers Bangalore took Cameron Green in their squad.
Hardik Pandya wrote on Instagram as he expressed his delight after joining his former franchise Mumbai Indians. He said, “This brings back so many wonderful memories. Mumbai. Wankhede. Paltan. Feels good to be back. ? #OneFamily @mumbaiindians.”
