Star India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin made a last-minute entry into India’s ODI World Cup 2023 squad. As a replacement for injured Axar Patel, Ashwin faces a huge challenge to prove his worth. However, as per his character, Ashwin did everything required to make his way into the squad. Meanwhile, ahead of the prestigious tournament, the off-spinner has spoken about his retirement.
Speaking with official broadcasters, Ashwin revealed that this could be his last World Cup for India. He also said that he is currently enjoying his time with the team and looking forward to the ODI World Cup. “Being in a good space and enjoying this tournament will keep me in good stead. This could be my last World Cup for India, so enjoying the tournament is of utmost importance,” Ashwin told Star Sports.
Meanwhile, speaking about his inclusion in the squad, Ashwin said that life is full of surprises. “I would have said that you were joking. Life is full of surprises. I honestly did not think I would be here. Circumstances have made sure I am here today; the team management has shown trust,” said Ashwin. It’s worth noting that before the Australia series, Ashwin played his last ODI almost two years ago, in January 2021.

Ravichandran Ashwin is set to play for India in the upcoming ODI World Cup, which will be his comeback in the tournament. Ashwin last represented India in the ODI World Cup in 2015 in Australia. He has taken 17 wickets in 10 World Cup games and will be keen to improve his tally in the upcoming tournament.
It’s worth noting that Ashwin and Virat Kohli are the only two Indian players who were part of India’s World Cup-winning 2011 squad. Playing under Captain Cool Mahendra Singh Dhoni, India won the ODI World Cup after 28 years. This year, the team will go all out to win the prestigious trophy for the third time. India’s campaign will start with a high-voltage clash against five-time champion Australia at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on October 8.
