Fans have been eagerly waiting for the ODI World Cup 2023, which is slated to be played in India. After a long delay, the Apex Cricket Council finally announced the schedule for the prestigious event, which will begin on the 5th of October.
The World Cup finalists from the 2019 edition, England and New Zealand, will face off in the opening game at Ahemdabad’s historic Narendra Modi Stadium. Ten teams will contest 45 matches in the league stage in the round-robin format, where each team will play every other team once.
The hosts, India, will play their opening game against five-time champions Australia at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on the 8th of October. The Men in Blue will face arch-rivals Pakistan in a much-anticipated match on October 15th at the Narendra Modi Stadium.
The league stage will end on November 12th, with the semi-finals beginning on November 15th. The iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, which hosted the 2011 World Cup Final, will host the first semi-final this year, while the Eden Garden in Kolkata will host the second semi-final on the 16th of November. The championship match will be played on the 19th of November in Ahmedabad.
The 45 league matches and three knockouts will be played in Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi, Dharamsala, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, and Pune over the period of 46 days. The two semi-finals and the final will also have reserve days.
Ten teams to compete in the tournament
Afghanistan, Australia, England, Bangladesh, New Zealand, Pakistan, and South Africa qualified for the tournament by finishing in the top eight in the World Cup Super League 2020-2023. The remaining two teams will be chosen from the ongoing World Cup Qualifiers in Zimbabwe. Sri Lanka, West Indies, Ireland, Nepal, Netherlands, Oman, Scotland, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), the United States of America (USA), and Zimbabwe, are the Ten teams competing for the final two spots.
