As technology advances, some unavoidable issues arise that can cause significant disruption. Cricket technology is no exception, as there have been numerous errors in decision-making. On Saturday, March 25, a similar bizarre incident occurred during the first ODI between hosts New Zealand and Sri Lanka at Eden Park in Auckland.
Chamika Karunaratne received a huge reprieve in the match. Karunaratne took 4/43 in his nine overs to limit the Kiwis to 274 and was the team’s best. However, he was also required to bat as the Sri Lankan batting order collapsed dramatically. On the fourth ball of the 18th over, facing Blair Tickner, Karunaratne scampered through for a quick single but fell short of his crease.
The decision was referred upstairs, and to everyone’s surprise, he was adjudged not out because, despite the fact that the bails were dislodged in time, the zing bails did not light up due to battery failure, and Karunaratne thanked his luck.

As for the game, Henry Shipley took a career-high five for 31 as New Zealand defeated Sri Lanka by 198 runs in the first One-Day International on Saturday in Auckland. Sri Lanka was bowled out for 76 in the 20th over while chasing 275, with Shipley orchestrating the attack on a fantastic Eden Park wicket.
On their dreadful scorecard, only three Sri Lankan batters reached double figures. Angelo Mathews led the Lankans with 18 runs in 25 balls, while Chamika Karunaratne and Lahiru Kumara contributed 11 and 10 runs, respectively.
The visitors were also humiliated in the previous two-match Test series, which cost them a place in the Test Championship final against Australia. As a result, India advanced to the match scheduled for the 7th of June at the Oval.
The loss in the first ODI may have jeopardised Sri Lanka’s direct entry into the ODI World Cup 2023, which will be held in India. The second ODI of the three-match series is scheduled for Tuesday in Christchurch.
