Bangalore has had a difficult start to its campaign in the inaugural Women’s T20 League 2023, having lost five of five matches. The top three teams will compete in two matches – the Eliminator and the Final – to determine the winner of the inaugural season. The table topper advances directly to the final, while the second and third-placed teams compete in the eliminator for a spot in the summit clash.
As of now, Mumbai is unbeaten and at the top of the points table in four games, followed by Delhi, who has won four and lost one, and UP, who has won two and lost two to take third place. Gujarat has also won one and lost three games so far. Bangalore, on the other hand, has lost five consecutive games and is rooted at the bottom of the table with an inferior Net Run Rate.
Mumbai and Delhi are likely to finish in the playoffs due to their higher NRRs. UP, along with Gujarat, appears to be the other team that will take third place. Bangalore is mathematically still alive but faces an uphill battle.
Banagalore’s playoff qualification scenario
After a poor start, it appears that Bangalore will not finish in the top three, but they still have a chance. If they win their remaining three matches and the other results go their way, they can still sneak into third place, as the top two are now out of reach. They will require Mumbai and Delhi to defeat UP and Gujarat, as well as Gujarat to defeat UP. However, given the team’s performance this season, all of this seems unlikely.
So far, the Smriti Mandhana-led squad, which includes Ellyse Perry, Sophie Devine, Megan Schutt, Richa Ghosh, Meghana Singh, and Heather Knight, has failed to live up to expectations. Only Perry, Knight, and Devine have made some contributions thus far, while the rest have not. Other uncapped Indian players, besides Shreyanka Patil, have also failed.
