On Wednesday, January 3, during the first innings in the 2nd Test match at Cape Town, India got bowled out for 153 runs. At the start of the 34th over of their innings, India fell apart with 153/4 being the score. In the 35th over, India were all-out for 153 runs on the scoreboard.
In Test cricket, this marked the maiden instance where a side lost six wickets without managing to score any runs. India’s historic collapse coincided with KL Rahul’s expulsion. Following Rahul’s outing, India lost wickets of Prasidh Krishna, Mohammed Siraj, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja Jasprit Bumrah.
Six Team India players were out for ducks during the first innings of the second Test match out of the eleven total. Prasidh Krishna, Mohammed Siraj, Ravindra Jadeja, Jasprit Bumrah, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Shreyas Iyer were all unable to score any runs at all. India equaled the world record for the most ducks scored in one innings. Six ducks have been recorded by a few teams in one inning. India landed on the regrettable list for the second time.
In a previous match played in Manchester in 2014, India had defeated England by scoring six ducks during a single innings. India was all-out for 152 runs back then and wrote this unwanted record.
23 wickets fall on Day 1 of second Test
During the first session of the Test match, India dismissed South Africa for a mere 55 runs. Mohammed Siraj went through the lineup and claimed six wickets to put India on top. India’s first innings seemed promising, but their spectacular collapse ended it. In the last session of that day, India was destroyed by South African fast bowlers. The trio of Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi, and Nandre Burger, who each claimed three wickets.
To put things in perspective, Australia and England lost 25 wickets on the first day of a Test match in Melbourne in 1902, which is the most amount of wickets ever lost in that particular match.
