Former Pakistan pacer Mohammad Amir retired from international cricket in late 2020. It was an early retirement as he was just 26-27 years old at the time. “I am leaving cricket for now because I’m being mentally tortured. I don’t think I can bear such torture. I’ve borne lots of torture from 2010 to 2015, for which I served my time. I’ve been tortured by being told the PCB invested a lot in me. I’ll just say two people invested in me a lot: [former PCB chairman] Najam Sethi and [former Pakistan captain] Shahid Afridi.

“They were the only two. The rest of the team was saying, ‘we don’t want to play with Amir’.

Meanwhile, after retirement, the left-arm pacer started the process of obtaining British citizenship. For the unversed, he is married to Pakistan-born Narjis Khan, who is both a British citizen and a lawyer. It is a matter of time before the 31-year-old gets his British passport. In an interview with Pakistani media, he was asked whether he would like to play in the IPL 2024.

“First, I will not play for England. I have played for Pakistan. Second (talking of IPL), there is one more year to go. What will be the scenario at that time… I always say that I go step by step. We don’t know what will happen tomorrow, and I start thinking about playing IPL in 2024,” he said.

“When I get my passport …whatever the best opportunity will be and what I will get…I will avail it,” he added.

Azhar Mahmood was the first player to play in the cash-rich league while coming from Pakistan who holds a British passport.
