‘Match batcha liya isne’ – Fans react as Glenn Phillips’ attacking knock helps New Zealand take lead against Bangladesh during 2nd Test
New Zealand are already trailing 1-0 in the series after a huge loss in the first test.
During New Zealand’s second Test match against Bangladesh, Glenn Phillips performed admirably under difficult circumstances. Featuring nine fours as well as four sixes in 72 balls, Phillips plundered 87 runs off of a pitch that seemed to be turning square and mostly in favour of spinners.
The Kiwis were struggling at 46 after losing five wickets inside 11.4 overs when Phillips entered the field. He was undefeated at Stumps after five runs. Rain spoiled plans for the right-handed batter on Day 2 and throughout the first session of Day 3, so he was unable to bat.
However, Phillips executed his shots freely and did not stop once play restarted. Within 38 balls, he reached his half-century and gave the New Zealand team just the boost they needed. With Daryl Mitchell, Phillips scored 49 runs over the sixth wicket. After that, he and Kyle Jamieson teamed together to put together a 55-run partnership for the ninth wicket.
Shoriful Islam claimed Phillips’ wicket just as he was about to get a well-earned first Test hundred. However, he made sure that the Kiwis had an eight-run advantage at the conclusion of the first innings. Tim Southee who scored an invaluable 14 before being the final person to be dismissed in the first innings.
Taking a look at Bangladesh’s start in second innings
The third day of the second Test between Bangladesh and New Zealand came to an early conclusion due to poor lighting. The hosts are currently 30 runs ahead of New Zealand with eight wickets in hand.
The Tigers scored 38 runs at the completion of day three. The team was led by opener Zakir Hassan and Mominul Haque who are still at the crease. After New Zealand was knocked out just before tea, Bangladesh was only able to bat for eight overs. Mahmudul Hasan Joy, the opening batsman, has already cost the hosts two wickets, and Najmul Hossain Shanto, the skipper, has lost fifteen.
