Indian batting sensation, Smriti Mandhana established the record with the most 50+ scores in the Women’s Hundred on Friday, August 4. The Indian hitter accomplished the feat while competing as part of Southern Brave versus Welsh Fire in the Southampton Rose Bowl.
On the record of the highest 50+ scores in tournament history, Mandhana and Jemimah Rodrigues, her Indian opponent, were tied before the match. In the competition, they each had four scores of at least 450. But in the Friday match, Mandhana ousted Jemimah, which meant she got one over her Indian teammate. Mandhana’s Southern Brave partner Danni Wyatt also had four 50-plus scores.
Mandhana needed 33 balls to reach her half-century before Freya Davies hit a boundary through midwicket. The Southpaw managed 70 runs from 42 balls and 11 fours while remaining unbeaten. Mandhana also made history by becoming the first player during the Women’s Hundred to score 500 runs.
Southern Brave vs Welsh Fire
Despite Mandhana’s brilliant performance, the Brave were defeated by four runs. She missed Hayley Matthews’ ball with five runs required from the last delivery.
Earlier, Matthews contributed to the Fire scoring the second-highest total in the Women’s Hundred’s history with 65 runs from 38 balls including 13 fours. She also got Chloe Tryon’s important wicket, which helped her earn Player of the Match.
Regarding Mandhana, she displayed remarkable form throughout the competition. She presently holds the top spot in the run-scoring column in the competition after scoring 125 runs in just two matches with an average of 125 as well as a strike rate of 160.25.
Thanks to victories in one out of two games, the Brave, led under Anya Shrubsole, are presently ranked third within the standings with two points as well as a net run rate of 0.575. The Welsh Fire, on the other hand, got their first win of the campaign after this close win against Southern Brave. They sit at the top of the league standings with three points and a healthy net run rate.
