Joburg Super Giants and MI Cape Town played each in the first game of the doubleheader on January 13. The subsidiaries of the IPL rivals were looking for their first win of the season. While MI lost to Durban Super Giants via the DLS method, the Super Kings had to settle with one point as the opening game against the defending champions, Sunrisers Eastern Cape was washed out.
Meanwhile, in this game, the home team, JSK won the toss, elected to bowl first, and paid heavily for it. MI openers, Rassie van der Dussen (104) and Ryan Rickelton (98) put together 200 runs in 15.3 overs. In the end, the team reached a tough total of 243/5, the second-highest total in the history of the tournament and the highest of the season.
For the home side, Nandre Burger took two wickets each while Lizaad Williams, Romario Shepherd, and former South Africa player Imran Tahir took a wicket each. Notably, the JSK bowlers had a rough day.

In reply, the Yellow Brigade looked out of sorts during the chase. Lack of partnerships and only four batters reaching the double-digit mark, the team was bowled out for 145 runs, losing the game by 98 runs. With this, the winning team has taken a bonus point too.
Faf du Plessis, Joburg Super Kings captain: I thought it (the pitch) would be a little stickier. There was not much turn when Moeen bowled the first over and I was a little concerned. We gave them some loose balls and they put up a tremendous partnership. They played exceptionally well today. At one stage, it felt like we would chase 300. Great opportunity to learn from it, learn how to make those big overs a little smaller. The bowling in the back-end was better but the damage had been done by then.
(On what he felt at the half-way stage) You try to say the Jacques Kallis line (that he said after the 434 innings) to keep the boys positive. But chases like that are always difficult. We picked a spin-heavy side, hoping for some more grip. This was like the old Wanderers and we need to adapt now.

The only concern for MICT this game will be how Brevis, Pollard, Livingstone and SCurran could only take them to 243 after being 200 in 15 overs.
If any two of those 4 can find some form moving forward no other team looks as strong as @MICapeTown. #SA20 #JSKvMICT

Faf said we thought we would be chasing 300 ? But we read the conditions wrong, and we know what to do from here on is the message from the loss. Watch out for our comeback ??? #JSK #JSKvMICT #SA20
