All purple cap winners in Indian T20 League so far
The initial perception of the shortest format was that it is a batter’s game. However, over the years, bowlers have come up with survival skills and striking ability to remain relevant in this format. Often, it has been observed that if batters win games, bowlers win tournaments.
The Indian T20 League is no different. In the last 14 years, batters have won Orange Caps for being the highest run-getters. Similarly, bowlers have won the purple cap for being the highest wicket-takers. In this listicle, we will discuss all the Purple Cap holders from 2008 to 2021.
List of Purple Cap winners
1.Sohail Tanvir (2008)
The former Pakistan pacer is the first Purple Cap winner of the ITL. The left-arm pacer took 22 wickets in 11 games and helped Rajasthan clinch the title. After this season, the Pakistan players were barred from playing the league due to political tensions between India and Pakistan.
2. R.P. Singh (2009)
The former India left-arm medium pacer won the purple cap while playing for Hyderabad. This was the first time the league was played outside of India due to general elections in the country. The 2007 T20 World Cup winner took the advantage of South Africa’s conditions and took 23 wickets in 16 games. The Adam Gilchrist-led side clinched the title after beating Bangalore.
3. Pragyan Ojha (2010)
The former India left-arm played for the defending champions Hyderabad (Deccan Chargers) and took 21 wickets in 16 games. However, his side couldn’t defend the title as the lost the semifinal against Chennai.
4. Lasith Malinga (2011)
The former Sri Lanka pacer took 28 wickets in 16 games for Mumbai. His side went to play the Qualifier Two where they lost to Bangalore.
5. Morne Morkel (2012)
The former South Africa pacer took 25 wickets in 16 games for Delhi. The Virendra Sehwag-led side went onto lose the Qualifier Two against Chennai.
6. Dwayne Bravo (2013)
The Trinidad-born player took a record 32 wickets in 18 games for Chennai. However, his efforts couldn’t help the team win their third ITL title as they lost to Mumbai in the final.
7. Mohit Sharma (2014)
The Faridabad-born player took 23 wickets in 16 games for Chennai. His side went onto lose the second eliminator against Punjab.
8. Dwayne Bravo (2015)
The former West Indies skipper became the first player to win two purple caps with 26 wickets in 16 games for Chennai. However, just like 2013, they lost the final against the same opponents.
9. Bhuvneshwar Kumar (2016)
The right-arm pacer played for Hyderabad and helped the team clinch their maiden title with 23 wickets in 17 games.
10. Bhuvneshwar Kumar (2017)
The Uttar Pradesh-born player became the second and first player to win back-to-back purple caps with 26 wickets in 14 games.
11. Andrew Tye (2018)
The Australian pacer took 24 wickets in 14 games for Punjab. His side didn’t qualify for the playoffs.
12. Imran Tahir (2019)
The former South Africa leg-spinner took 26 wickets in 17 games and helped Chennai qualify for the final. The team lost to Mumbai by one run.
13. Kagiso Rabada (2020)
The South Africa pacer took 30 wickets in 17 games and helped Delhi play their first final. However, the team was thrashed badly by Mumbai in the final.
14. Harshal Patel (2021)
The Haryana pacer took 32 wickets in 15 games for Bangalore and equaled the record of Dwayne Bravo. His side lost to Kolkata in the eliminator.
