In preparation for his big comeback on Wednesday in the pivotal ODI World Cup 2023 match against South Africa, New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson is getting ready. Williamson is returning to action, striking cricket balls during the nets, after suffering a fractured thumb more than two weeks ago. His recuperation has been encouraging.
Williamson will, if healthy, take Will Young’s spot as the first hitter in the starting lineup. Due to squad ailments, the Black Caps have suffered losses in their past two games against Australia and India.
New Zealand Head Coach Gary Stead said, “He had a light training session, but he’ll be practicing on Monday and the following day, aiming to be ready for the game. Whether he plays depends on how well he progresses in the next few days.”
Lockie Ferguson is getting a scan to determine his health after leaving the pitch during the encounter against Australia with an Achilles issue.
Gary Stead added, “Ferguson woke up feeling somewhat better than before, but he’ll undergo a scan tomorrow in Pune. We’re optimistic that it might only take about a week for him to return to play. It’s an issue he’s dealt with before, but unfortunately, it’s flared up again, and the timing isn’t ideal for him.”
New Zealand batter Mark Chapman ruled out of South Africa clash
A calf niggle has ruled Mark Chapman out of the upcoming clash against South Africa. While Chapman’s absence opens the door for Jimmy Neesham to step in, the potential return of veteran seam bowler Tim Southee could compensate for Ferguson’s unavailability.
With matches against South Africa, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka remaining in the group stage, the Blackcaps face a crucial juncture in the World Cup. Winning at least one, if not two, of these fixtures is important for their advancement to the semi-finals.As the team navigates through these challenges, the return of Williamson provides a glimmer of hope for Blackcaps fans worldwide.
