Rohit Sharma, the Indian skipper, came out all guns blazing versus Afghanistan in their ODI World Cup 2023 clash on Wednesday. The 36-year-old was out for a duck in the previous game against Australia in Chennai. It was vintage Rohit Sharma as the New Delhi crowd and the Indian team members were thrilled to bits seeing his batting.
Afghanistan had set India 273 runs to win their second game of the ODI World Cup 2023 in New Delhi. The Indian team came out with intent as they went after every Afghanistan bowler. Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan powered the Indian team to an electric start with the bat.
Earlier, half-centuries from Hasmatullah Shahidi and Azmatullah had helped the Afghans reach 272/8. Jasprit Bumrah was the star with the ball picking four wickets from his ten-over spell.
Rohit Sharma breaks record during his whirlwind knock
The Indian skipper launched a brutal attack on the Afghanistan bowlers in pursuit of 273. Rohit Sharma was batting on 16 when he stepped down the track to hit a huge six. This was enough to make him the fastest Indian to reach 1000 runs in World Cup history.
David Warner had on Sunday become the fastest batter to score 1000 runs in World Cup cricket. With that six Rohit Sharma had equalled the feat set by the Australian opener. There was no stopping the Indian skipper as he went on a rampage with the bat.
One more was waiting to be broken and that came when Rohit Sharma hit his fourth six of the innings. This six took Rohit Sharma to 554 international sixes going past the record set by Chris Gayle.
The former West Indian great had hit 553 international sixes in his career which spanned two decades. The 36-year-old Indian skipper had reached 550 sixes during the Rajkot ODI versus Australia recently.
It turned out to be a memorable day for the Indian skipper as he scored his 31st ODI century for India. This was also his seventh century in World Cup history after his record five centuries during the 2019 edition.
Team India and its fans will hope the Indian skipper can keep the form going with the huge game against Pakistan around the corner. Rohit Sharma’s form during the next few weeks will be crucial as India aims to lift its third World Cup title.
