The injury of Shreyas Iyer has been a big concern for the Indian team in recent times. His injury prevented him from batting in the final Test of the recently concluded Border-Gavaskar Trophy at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

Subsequently, he also missed the ODI series against the mighty Australian side, which the hosts lost 2-1. Earlier, Iyer had also missed the first Test match of the series due to his back issues. According to recent reports, Iyer is now eyeing the Test Championship Final for his return.

It was earlier reported that the right-handed batter will undergo surgery and will be out of action for some time. However, it has been reported that he has decided not to undergo surgery. Instead, he has decided to take an injection at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) to make himself available at the earliest.

“He has met the specialist and the NCA officials. All are on the same page that the operation can be deferred. He will follow the experts’ advice,” said a source close to him as reported by Cricbuzz.

Nitish Rana to lead Kolkata in Shreyas Iyer’s absence

In the meantime, Iyer will be unable to compete in the Indian T20 League in 2023 as well. In the absence of Shreyas Iyer, his team, Kolkata, has named Nitish Rana as their new captain for the upcoming season.

The two-time champion franchise announced their stand-in captain on social media. They stated on social media stating that Rana will fill Iyer’s shoes in his absence. Iyer was also wished a speedy recovery by the team.

“While we are hopeful that Shreyas will recover and participate at some stage in the ITL 2023 edition, we feel fortunate that Nitish, with captaincy experience having led his state side in white-ball cricket and the ITL experience he has had with Kolkata since 2018, will do a great job. We are also confident that under Head Coach Chandrakant Pandit and the support staff, he will get all the support needed off the field, and the highly experienced leaders in the squad will provide all the support that Nitish may need on the field. We wish him the best in his new role and Shreyas a full and speedy recovery,” the Kolkata team said in a statement.
