Delhi and Punjab played each other at the D.Y Patil Stadium in Mumbai. This game was a must-win for both teams with a playoff spot at stake. After winning the toss, the Mayank Agarwal-led side decided to bowl first. Delhi lost the wicket of David Warner on the first ball of the innings. The scenario before the dismissal was an interesting one.

While reaching the crease with his opening partner Sarfaraz Khan, he decided to take the strike at the last moment. For the unversed, Khan was meant to take the strike. Meanwhile, the decision proved to be a fatal one for Warner. He got to Liam Livingstone who was the least expected player to bowl the first over of the innings for the Men In Red.

After this, Mitchell Marsh and Khan upped the scoring rate as they stitched a partnership of 51 runs. Khan (32 off 16) couldn’t convert his start to a big score. On the other hand, Marsh carried his form with the bat by scoring 63 off 48 including four fours and two sixes. The team finished 159/7 as they couldn’t score enough runs at the backend of the innings.

For the 2014 finalists, Liam Livingstone and Arshdeep Singh took three wickets each while Kagiso Rabada took one. In reply, the Men In Red had a great start as Jonny Bairstow and Shikhar Dhawan scored 38 runs in 3.5 overs for the first wicket. However, after Bairstow’s wicket, the team lost wickets at regular intervals.

From 38/1 they went to 82/7 with batters such as Shikhar Dhawan, Liam Livingstone, Bhanuka Rajapaksa and all-rounders such as Harpreet Brar and Rishi Dhawan failed with the bat. Shardul Thakur, Axar Patel, and Kuldeep Yadav took two wickets each in this phase. At this phase, the 2020 finalists looked like winning the game easily. However, Jitesh Sharma (44) fought for the team’s cause.

He was ably supported by Rahul Chahar from the other end. After Sharma’s wicket, the team went on to lose the game by 18 runs, as they were restricted to 142/9.
