Hyderabad and Chennai played each other at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune. After winning the toss, the Orange Army elected to bowl first. However, this decision proved to be a wrong one as their bowlers were beaten badly by the opposition openers. Ruturaj Gaikwad and Devon Conway took the attack on the opposition bowlers as they stitched the partnership of 182 runs.

Gaikwad score 99 off 57 including six fours and as many sixes while Conway remained unbeaten on 85 off 55 balls including eight fours and four sixes. The right-hander could have got to the second hundred of his Indian T20 League career with 2.2 overs remaining in the innings. However, trying to play the cut shot against T. Natarajan, the ball took the outside edge and went straight into the hands of Bhuvneshwar Kumar.

Thanks to both openers, the other batters didn’t have to break a sweat to reach the total of 202/2. For the 2016 winners, Natarajan took the two wickets that fell in the innings. Apart from him, Kumar didn’t take a wicket but bowled with an economy of 5.50. Others such as Umran Malik, Marco Jansen, Aiden Markram, and Shashank Singh went for way too many runs for the team’s liking. In reply, the Kane Williamson-led side started well with 58 runs in the powerplay.

However, Mukesh Choudhary took back-to-back wickets of Abhishek Sharma and Rahul Tripathi at the end of the powerplay to leave the team at 58/2. Tripathi’s wicket was one of the big ones for the Yellow Brigade as he is one of the in-form batters. Another in-form player Aiden Markram failed to make an impact while Williamson (47) couldn’t convert his start to a big score.

Shashank Singh, who rose to fame after hitting three sixes against Lockie Ferguson, could increase the scoring rate to match the required run rate. Nicholas Pooran played a lone hand with an unbeaten 64 off 33 balls but he could only take the team to 189/6 as he lacked support from the other end.
