The Cricket Association of Nepal has received assistance from the Indian Cricket Board. Nepal, Baroda, along with Gujarat will compete in a tri-series called the Friendship Cup. It has been organised by Jay Shah and the Indian Cricket Board.
The series, which is scheduled to take place from March 31 to April 7, would provide Nepal’s cricket players with significant exposure prior to the June 2024 T20 World Cup. A number of affiliate teams, including Nepal, have made it into the competition, which now features 20 teams. Baroda is anticipated to pose a strong threat to Nepal among the tri-series teams. In a thrilling last-ball match, Krunal Pandya’s side fell to Punjab during the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy final.
The squad features Pandya, Vishnu Solanki, and Lukman Meriwala, three well-known figures who dominate the Indian domestic space. However, the number of players who will be available during the IPL weeks is unknown.
Along with Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, South Africa, and the Netherlands, Nepal has been assigned to Group D. Even though they are undoubtedly the least experienced team within the group, Nepal might be a serious danger on their day given the format. June 1 marks the commencement of the T20 World Cup, and on June 4 Nepal will take on the Netherlands in their opening encounter. Following the match, Nepal will play South Africa, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh.
The new and updated format of the T20 World Cup
A new format will be introduced for the T20 World Cup 2024. This updated format will include 20 teams for the very first time. The top two teams from each of the four groups of five that these teams have been placed in will advance to the Super Eight round.
The remaining teams will then be divided into two groups of four at this point. The two teams who place highest in each of these groups move on to the semi-finals. The final of the mega tournament is set to take place on June 30.
