Today cricket supporters saw another heartbreaking collapse. During England’s crucial match-up against Sri Lanka, adding to their difficulties in the ODI World Cup 2023

At Bengaluru’s M Chinnaswamy Stadium, England lost the first five wickets for a mere 85 runs. This was a result of a string of subpar performances by most of the batters. Jonny Bairstow as well as Dawid Malan, the opening pair, got the reigning champions off to a fast start by scoring 45 runs over the first wicket.

During the competition, England appeared to be finally improving their bad form, but this didn’t last long. With Malan’s wicket, Angelo Mathews delivered Sri Lanka the crucial breakthrough to start off the proceedings. England might be out of the running for a semi-final position after losing five wickets. They were 45/0 and they stumbled down to 85/5 after just 17 overs.

In his opening match of the competition, Mathews further shocked the defending champions by getting rid of Joe Root in the tenth over. With no push on the ball, Root played across Maheesh Theekshana’s ball towards a point area.

Root exited his crease to record a dangerous single and promptly asked for a run. However, Bairstow forced his Yorkshire colleague back, and Mathews’s precise throw tore down the stumps before Root could get back to his mark.

England collapse against Sri Lanka in ODI World Cup 2023

With a sensational catch at mid-on, Dhananjaya de Silva dismissed Jonny Bairstow, who had amassed thirty runs. With crucial wickets in a matter of moments of Jos Buttler as well as Liam Livingstone, pace Lahiru Kumara also had a big influence. On the flat surface, they were anticipated to do well, but they also faltered against Sri Lanka’s inexperienced bowling attack.

Many believed that this match may see the aggressive England return to form against the faltering Lankan Lions after England skipper Buttler won the coin toss and chose to bat first. The 2019 World Champions lost all their wickets at a poor score of 156 runs. This means that  things have gone completely the other way than they thought.
