Former Indian cricketer Harbhajan Singh has said that Tilak Varma can be the future skipper of Mumbai in the Indian T20 League. Varma has been superb for the Rohit Sharma-led side amidst the team’s poor run this season. The left-hander has been the highest run-getter for the team with 368 runs in 12 games. Not too many people expected him to be Mumbai’s best batter in this edition as they have several top-class batters on their side.
However, in the ongoing season, the former India U19 player has displayed a wide variety of strokes. Also, he has shouldered the responsibility on his young shoulders as the likes of Rohit Sharma, Kieron Pollard, Ishan Kishan, etc have failed to impress. Meanwhile, Singh has said that the 19-year-old has the potential to play for the five-time winners for many years to come.
The legendary offie also added that Varma might be the future skipper of the team, and also mentioned Tim David could be the future of the team.
“The thing is right. He has the potential, and we will see him play for Mumbai Indians for many years to come. Tilak alongside David too. I think Tilak will be the future captain for Mumbai Indians,†Harbhajan Singh said on Star Sports.
On the other hand, Aakash Chopra also opines that Varma could be the future skipper of the Men In Blue and Gold.
“Wow, your heard that first here. The left-handed batter who is currently on strike can become the future skipper of Mumbai Indians,†the former Team Indian batsman said.
On May 12, David and Varma helped their side win a low-scoring game against Chennai. Their side was tottering at 33/4, chasing a modest target of 98 runs to win. Varma scored an unbeaten 34 off 32 balls. David came out to bat when Hrithik Shokeen was clean bowled by Moeen Ali. David hit two sixes in the 15th over to take the team over the line. Thus, this enabled Mumbai to win their third game of this season.
