England skipper Jos Buttler will speak with Ben Stokes to find out if the all-rounder is ready to reconsider his ODI retirement, according to England white-ball coach Matthew Mott. According to Mott, Stokes performing as a specialist batter in the ODI World Cup in 2023 is acceptable to the administration of the England squad.

At the age of 31, Stokes unexpectedly announced that he would be retiring from ODIs in July of last year. He announced his departure from the format by saying that he could no longer continue to play all three game variants.

With the bat, Stokes was instrumental in the recently completed Ashes 2023, which ended 2-2. Due to his knee ailment, which has been bothering him for some time, he was unable to bowl as much.

In any case, when Jack Leach suffered an injury, Stokes sent Moeen Ali a distress call asking him to return from Test retirement for the 2023 Ashes. The defending ODI world champions would like Stokes to take similar action, therefore England will be hoping for it.

Matthew Mott said to the Daily Mail that, “Jos will probably lead the way on that communication, but Ben’s pretty straight with all of us. We will see if he’s keen. There has not been a clear direction on what he’s going to do yet, but we are still hopeful. I’ve always said his bowling would be a bonus, but just look at what he brings with the bat, even in the field.”

The England white-ball coach added that he was impressed by the performance of Stokes in the Ashes. He said, “Watching him throughout the whole Ashes series, he had such a great presence. He’s done it for years when it comes to performing in one-day cricket and so he’s an invaluable commodity.”

With 105 ODI appearances for England, Stokes scored 2924 runs at an average of 38.98, including three centuries and 21 fifty-pluses. He had 74 wickets taken with an average of 42.39 while bowling.
