Concerning the 2011 World Cup final involving India and Sri Lanka, Gautam Gambhir made yet another significant comment. Gambhir along with MS Dhoni led the Men in Blue’s batting onslaught as they led their team to victory.
Dhoni’s undefeated 91 runs from 79 balls earned him the title of Match’s Most Valuable Player. However, according to Gambhir, Zaheer should have received the award for his outstanding opening period with the ball. He said, “Zaheer Khan should have been the Man of the Match in the final of World Cup 2011.”
During the mega encounter in 2011, Zaheer bowled 10 overs while taking 2 wickets and giving up 60 runs. Gautam Gambhir was also one of the stars of the show that night as he was just 3 runs short of a well-deserved ODI World Cup final hundred.
Team India won the ODI World Cup for the second time on 2nd April 2011. They won the game by 6 wickets while chasing a tricky score of 275 in front of a packed Wankhede stadium. Since then India have failed to make the final of the ODI World Cup. In both the 2015 and 2019 editions, India lost in the tournament’s semi-finals.
“There is a huge difference”: Gautam Gambhir on Jasprit Bumrah and Shaheen Afridi
Before both sides’ match on Saturday in Ahmedabad, Gautam Gambhir praised Jasprit Bumrah as the most devastating bowler in cricket at the present. He noted that he as well as Pakistan’s Shaheen Shah Afridi are quite different players. Bumrah has been in excellent form throughout the ODI World Cup 2023, as seen by the six wickets he has taken from his 20 overs in two matches.
Gautam Gambhir said, “The way he dismissed Mitchell Marsh on that wicket (in the first game against Australia) and the way he dismissed Ibrahim Zadran if there is a complete and most lethal bowler in world cricket, it is Bumrah. We compared Jasprit Bumrah and Shaheen Shah Afridi earlier; there is a huge difference.”
