Chennai and Punjab played against each other in the 11th game of the Indian T20 league at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai. Both teams had contrasting fortunes coming into the game. Chennai had lost both games against Kolkata and Lucknow respectively. On the other hand, Punjab started their campaign with a win against Bangalore but lost against Kolkata in their next.
The defending champions won the toss and elected to bowl first, which is not a surprise given the trend of the tournament. They had a great start as left-arm pacer Mukesh Choudhary took the wicket of Punjab skipper Mayank Agarwal (4) on the second ball of the innings. Bhanuka Rajapaksa (9) followed in the next over owing to a brilliant run out from MS Dhoni.
Shikhar Dhawan (33) and Liam Livingstone took the team to 109 runs in 10 overs, thanks to their partnership of 95 runs for the third wicket. Dhawan was taken out by Dwayne Bravo. Livingstone (60) followed the next over as he was caught by Ambati Rayudu off Ravindra Jadeja. At 115/4, the team looked like crossing the 200-run mark but some excellent death bowling from the Men In Yellow meant that the team was restricted to 180/8.
For the four-time winners, Chris Jordan and Dwaine Pretorius took two wickets each while Jadeja, Bravo and Mukesh Choudhary took one each. In reply, the Yellow Brigade had a forgettable start as they lost five wickets for 36 runs. Debutant Vaibhav Arora took two wickets while Kagiso Rabada, Arshdeep Singh, and Odean Smith took one each. The likes of Shivan Dube (57) and MS Dhoni (28) tried to resurrect the team with a partnership of 62 runs.
The former fell to Livingstone which meant that the Men in Red and Gold wrapped the game in no time. They restricted the opponents to 126 all-out, winning the game by 54 runs.
