Former Team India opener takes cheeky dig at RCB management after hiring Andy Flower as head coach

Aakash Chopra spoke about the thinking behind RCB’s decision of changing coaching staff

The Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) franchise took a bold step according to Aakash Chopra as they removed their coaching staff despite having a successful run in the previous Indian Premier League seasons.

Mike Hesson and Sanjay Bangar, who served as the franchise’s director of cricket operations and head coach, were fired by the Bangalore-based team. For the upcoming season of the cash-rich league, they have chosen Andy Flower, who was the former head coach of the Lucknow Super Giants.

In a video he posted on his channel on YouTube, Chopra discussed the development and pointed out that while RCB’s performance in the IPL may not be stellar overall, they have been remarkably steady over the previous four years.

He said, “The Royal Challengers Bangalore have appointed a new coach. Andy Flower will become RCB’s coach. It also means Mike Hesson and Sanjay Bangar’s tenure ends here. This team has a huge fan base but has not been that successful.”

You won’t be able to address your prevailing weaknesses: Aakash Chopra

The former Kolkata Knight Riders opener spoke about how the RCB franchise had been successful over the past few years despite not winning the title. He said, “The previous performances have not been ordinary at all. It has now become a 10-team tournament and reaching the playoffs in three of the last four years is not bad at all. You didn’t qualify last year, but then, so be it.”

The former Team India batter discussed how changing the coaching staff might not result in any success. He added that, “The winds of change have started blowing now. What will Andy Flower have to do? In my opinion, if you are not part of a mega auction, you won’t be able to do too much movement. You won’t be able to address your prevailing weaknesses.”

Aakash Chopra discussed how it was a very wrong timing to change the coaching staff. He concluded by saying that, “If a new coaching staff comes at the time of a mega auction, you actually have the slate clean and you start afresh, but if you come in the middle like Andy Flower has come now, his hands will be slightly tied because you have the same players only.”
