Indian team captain Rohit Sharma scored a century in Nagpur Test against Australia on Friday. Rohit, who came in as an opener, completed his 9th Test century in 171 balls after lunch on the second day of the Test match on Friday, February 10. This is his first Test century against Australia and also as a Test captain. He scored his century with the help of 14 fours and two sixes during his inning. Rohit got the captaincy of the Indian Test team after Virat Kohli stepped down last from the role.
Rohit has scored a century in all three formats of international cricket as captain. He is the first captain of India to do this feat. Even veterans like Virat Kohli and Mahendra Singh Dhoni couldn’t achieve this milestone. Only three captains have been able to do this before Rohit in international cricket which includes Sri Lanka’s Tillakaratne Dilshan, South Africa’s Faf du Plessis, and Pakistan’s Babar Azam.
Poor batting performance by Australians
Rohit attacked from the very first ball on a difficult pitch for batting. He hit world number one Test bowler Pat Cummins for 3 fours in the very first over of the Indian innings. He completed his fifty in just 66 balls. But on the second day of the match, Rohit scored at a slow pace.
However, India kept losing wickets from the other end as they have lost their 5 batters after getting the 200-run mark. Allrounder Ravindra Jadeja, who picked a fifer in the first innings is currently batting with Rohit. Jadeja made his comeback in an international match after 5 months as he was recovering from a knee injury during India’s Asia Cup 2022 campaign.
Earlier, Australia opted to bat first after winning the toss and managed to score only 177 runs in the first innings. No Australian batter could even score a fifty on the Nagpur pitch. Marnus Labuschagne was the highest scorer for the Kangaroos with 49 runs. Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin took no time to clear up the tailenders.
